The school started in a village called Warmond and after 5 years the place Noordwijkerhout was added. Since January 1999 the village Lisse was added and about six monhts later Voorhout.
Taiyo in the region is mostly known for his demonstrations in these villages and by the yearly held Kumite tournaments who were unique in the region and perhaps even the first in the Netherlands because of the various Martiak Arts demonstrations and the way it was set up for both starters as experienced fighters.
The lessons are given in a traditional Shotokan style. This Style originated from the Japannees Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Karate as we know it now. The nicknamenaam of Funakoshi was Shoto and he was the first who thought this form of Karate in his own home(Kan). Thus the name Shotokan, "house of Shoto". It's a non/semi contact style mostly known for its low stances and Kata (style exercises or forms).
Taiyo is a member of the most important Dutch Karate federations Next tho being a member of the International Martial Arts Federation, holding several titles (a.o. a number of times 1st and 2nd places with Kata and Kumite) Taiyo also is member of the FOG (Federatie Oosterse Gevechtssporten). Together with a friendly school we are also member of the KBN (Karatebond Nederland). This originated in 2002 when we decided to compete with some of our students in the open Eindhoven (ElHatri) Kumite tournament organised by the KBN.There we proved to be on a high level. The next year we even got a 1st and 2nd place. We then decided to add an extra hour for a group of students with just competition training. This hour is open for all students but the teachers decide who can or cannot. Since then we competed at the ONKJ (Open Dutch Youth Championships) and although we had no prices there we made the semi finals. The extra trainings resulted however in medalles during the NK (Dutch Championships) of 2003 and 2004 where Cheryl Porcelijn became 2nd place for two years in a row. Also Dennis van Hal and Dennis de Jong came close. At other regional championships Taiyo performed wel. And as you can see in our Hall of Fame we had more 1st, 2nd and 3rd places since then.
The sensei (teachers) are Peter van de Berg and Dave Porcelijn. The school is memmber of the International Martial Arts Federation (IMAF) and Federatie Oosterse Gevechtskunsten (FOG).Both teachers are recognized by NOC*NSF.Dave Porcelijn obtained his 4th Dan in November 2002. Next to a selfmade Kihon he performed 3 high level Kata, Meikyo, Wankan and Unsu. After that he showed a number of self created bunkai/Ippon kumite. The idea is that for a 4th Dan exam you create a number of Ippon Kumite and while Dave was working on various Bunkai combinations after having several courses and being inspired by the teaching of Vince Morris, Micheal Milon and Nedim Köse he combined this bunkai with Ippon Kumite. Last but not least were a number of defecences against knife followed by Sai against short stick (Jo). Finally Dave showed a Sai Kata During the break of an Internationale course in Sportcentrum Papendal the 4th Dan was handed to Dave by Belgium 7th Dan Geoff Benoy under the eye of a.o. John Bluming (10e Dan Kyokushinkai Karate), Eric Pariset (7e Dan Jiu Jitsu from France and well know for the budo gala in Bercy, France), 8e Dan Judo Tony Wagenaar and many other high ranked Budoka. Peter van den Berg obtained his 3rd Dan in Amstelveen, May 2002. After waiting for the 1st Dan candidates Peter could finally start. Being the only candidate for 3rd Dan he had to show the Kihon and Kata by himself. Peter showed a selfmade Kihon. This was done very could and without errors. According to the exam comitte this was later said as 'This is an example of how you should perform for a 3rd Dan.
For Kata, Peter had chosen for Sochin, Nijushiho and Jiin. Difficult Kata with kicks, fast turns and various combinations. Also these went well. Finally a number of self defence exercies were shown. First against one opponent and then two. These were done with empty hands and also against knife and stick. Without hesatations and again mentioning that this is how it should bedone Peter was handed over his 3rd Dan 13611 |
